Renters insurance in California is not required by state law, but it is frequently mandated by landlords as a condition of your lease.

 

- Covers personal belongings (theft, fire, etc.)  Note: This often covers your items even when they are outside your home, such as in your car or while traveling.

- Liability protection if someone gets hurt in your rental.

- ALE (additional living expenses) if your rental is uninhabitable.

- Typically doesn't cover flood, earthquake, or pest damage.
